Abstract

Colitis, a complex inflammatory disorder, poses significant challenges in its management. This review encapsulates the burgeoning research exploring the therapeutic potential of rutin in colitis intervention. Our synthesis of existing literature encompasses both preclinical investigations and clinical trials, illuminating rutin’s multifaceted efficacy. In preclinical studies, rutin demonstrates notable anti-inflammatory properties, inhibiting inflammatory mediators and modulating immune responses. Its impact on oxidative stress, gut microbiota, and experimental colitis models further accentuates its promise. Clinical trials conducted in diverse geographical locations affirm rutin’s potential as an adjunct or alternative therapy. Trials in China and India reveal its efficacy in improving clinical and endoscopic parameters, mirroring conventional treatments. Future research directions call for a deeper understanding. Larger clinical trials, particularly those elucidating long-term effects and gut microbiota modulation, are essential. Exploring synergies with conventional therapies also warrants investigation. The integration of rutin into colitis management strategies holds profound implications, offering a natural and well-tolerated avenue for patient care.
